Independent Living
Independent Living facilities are for the very independent and self functioning senior. These facilities are usually apartment or condo like settings, with private units similar to a regular apartment. There usually is a dining room and meal packages can be purchased in advance. The facility often provides in house entertainment, some are equipped with game rooms or libraries and planned social outings are a regular option. Seniors living here must have minimal medical needs that can be self maintained. Seniors move into Independent Living situations because these facilities give them freedom from housekeeping, laundry services and meal preparation, yet they can still enjoy their independence and companionship with their peers.
Assisted Living
Assisted Living facilities are where most seniors find their new home when simple tasks in daily living are getting too difficult. Yet they do not require the high level of medical care provided in a nursing home. Assisted Living can be an apartment style living or a smaller board and care. Assistance includes everything that doesn't require professional medical assistance such as dressing, bathing, grooming, walking, incontinence care, and maintenance of medication. The larger apartment style Assisted Livings can offer many of the same amenities as an Independent Living. Assisted Living costs are a bit higher than Independent Living due to the extra care.
Board and Care (Assisted Living)
Board and Cares are Assisted Livings with a more personal touch. Board and Cares are regular homes modified according to state regulations. They usually house 3-6 residents and offer a "home-like" feel for their residents. Residents in Board and Cares often require slightly more attention than the larger Assisted Livings. These homes are great for individuals that prefer privacy and choose a more one-on-one approach from the care givers. Additional amenities vary from home to home.
Alzheimer's Care
Alzheimer's Care homes are strictly for those residents that have Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. Homes are specifically modified to cater to these individuals. Each home will have an extensive alarm system from preventing residents from wandering. The staff at such a home will have been given special courses in taking care of the dementia resident. Amenities and activities are also carefully thought out to meet the needs of Alzheimer's or dementia care.
Nursing Home
Nursing homes provide 24 hour skilled nursing care by licensed nurses. Nursing homes are also used by short term residents that have recently been injured or stricken by an illness for rehabilitative purposes. Nursing homes often have an in house physician as well as physical therapists, occupational therapists and other professionals. There usually is a central dining location, but meals can be brought to the room. Long term residents generally have complex medical conditions and high care needs that require constant supervision.
